Another score, thanks to our guide. We pulled off at this little unnamed temple, climbed up on the roof, and had an amazing view of many of the temples and pagodas in Bagan.

View of That-byin-nyu Temple from Shwe-gu-gyi. That-byin-nyu is Bagan's highest pagoda - over 66 meters high. It was built by King Alaungsithu in the middle of the 12th century.

At the end of the day, our driver took us to Shwe-san-daw Paya, a beautiful stepped structure where we stayed for over an hour waiting for the sunset and watching as the evening sun danced upon the pagoda dotted landscape.

It was quite a steep climb to the top of Shwe-san-daw Paya. Photo taken by Byron.

Before heading back to the hotel, we asked our guide to take us by the Lawkananda Pagoda which was all lit up at night. It was just big and gold, and we'd seen enough of that, so we headed back to the hotel.

Byron and I ordered a taxi to the airport, and after waiting for quite awhile, they finally shoved us in the back of a canvas covered pickup truck, and we had a very dusty short trip to the airport.

After flying back to Yangon from Bagan, we visited Shwedagon Pagoda before heading back to the ship.

IMG_1392.JPG
Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon is considered by the Burmese people to be a place they must visit at least once in their lives as sort of a religious pilgrimage.

No one told us that you want to avoid Shwedagon during the day because it is way too hot. We didn't stay too long because we couldn't shake our self-appointed guide, the bottoms of our feet were burning even in the shade, and although it was magnificent, it was all the glitz and glamour we'd seen in other pagodas all smashed together into one bigger, better, pagoda.

Even during the heat of the day, Shwedagon Pagoda is quite crowded, especially the very few shaded areas.
